January 2002 - Smartcard Solution to Log-on Security Weakness

IT security and networking specialist Barron McCann, and leading smartcard systems developer Ecebs, have developed a smartcard authentication solution to a common IT systems security weakness exposed when users log-on and authenticate themselves.

Until now, user log-on and authentication has been conducted 'in the open' ahead of beginning encryption once the user is authenticated and free to access their corporate IT systems. This leaves the log-on passwords open to the risk of interception, especially during remote access. The solution developed by Barron McCann and Ecebs uses a smartcard-based, encrypted network link to protect the authentication log-on. Network encryption begins the instant a connection is made whether the user is logging onto a local Intranet, using direct-dial or remotely accessing the corporate systems over the Internet.

The smartcard solution combines Ecebs' smartcard technology with Barron McCann's X-Kryptor network encryption device to provide the total end-to-end security for smartcard users. X-Kryptor uses AES (Rijndael 256) to encrypt communications between the user and X-Kryptor device positioned in front of an authentication server and other corporate servers.

According to David Braddock, managing director, Ecebs, the X-Kryptor provides a multi-tiered security solution. "To begin with the X-Kryptor only accepts encrypted traffic so you need to physically have the X-Kryptor client software on your machine. Second it encrypts all traffic the instant a connection is made, there's no gap between logging on and authenticating yourself," he said.

Barron McCann security specialist, Peter Alderson believes organisations previously deterred from using smartcards need to think again. "X-Kryptor fits simply within a network infrastructure or alongside a firewall. It gives companies complete confidence in the security integrity of their systems whether users are authenticating themselves locally or over the Internet."
