Security

If people are talking smartcards, they are automatically thinking about security

Smart cards by their very invention are designed to prevent unauthorised access to information and/or services.

Did you know?

  • Smart cards are generally not in a controlled environment
  • They are not held in secure data centres
  • The security of any system is only as strong as its weakest link
  • Attacks on smart cards have evolved - just in the same way desktop computer viruses and other malware have done

Many of us have a smart card in our wallet or in our mobile phone. As a result, they can be relatively easily misplaced, lost or stolen. In the wrong hands your smart card could have its data accessed or be used to access an account that you hold by an unauthorised 3rd party.

Fortunately Ecebs completely understands these risks.

Ecebs guide our customers at every step in assessing the risks that apply to any scheme they may wish to implement. Together, based on that risk assessment, the client and the Ecebs' engineers can proceed with determining appropriate protection mechanisms, while still satisfying any performance requirements of the system.

Our engineering staff have many years of experience in the smart card industry, including smart card semiconductor manufacturing, design, test and research & development. Our engineers have brought the benefits of that knowledge to the software solutions developed by Ecebs, on several different platforms.

We base our security solutions on published algorithms that have been scrutinised by the cryptographic academic community, government agencies and those certification bodies that assess the strength of any smart card system. These algorithms and protocols are our basic building blocks and tools from which we build the solutions that meet our customers' needs.

Ecebs are members of the following ITSO Committees:

  • Technology
  • Security
  • ITSO working groups, WG1 (messaging) and WG2 (hot lists and action lists)
  • We also hold the chair of the ITSO working Group 3 on Customer Media

We have also gained Common Criteria certification for our development work on the ITSO SAM and are actively involved with attack centres such as TNO where we have passed evaluations.

Choosing to work with Ecebs means you are in safe hands.

We understand that smart card software developers have to have a detailed and thorough understanding of the platforms on which they are working in order to develop robust and effective defences. Our staff have both knowledge and extensive industry experience, we also have Java certified programmers. We believe this technical expertise is core to the success of our solutions and is something Ecebs continue to invest in.
